The Melbourne Employment Market Is Changing — But Good Talent Still Matters.
If the employment market feels a little different lately, you're not imagining it.
The unemployment rate in Victoria is currently sitting at 5.1%, compared with the national rate of 4.5% and the broader market has softened as businesses become more cautious about growth and hiring. (Australian Bureau of Statistics)
But this doesn't necessarily mean employers can suddenly sit back and expect exceptional candidates to come knocking on their door, because what we are seeing is a more competitive and considered market. There are more candidates actively looking for work, recruitment processes are taking longer and businesses are being more selective before committing to a new hire.
However, there is still an important distinction between more available candidates and more great candidates.
Many candidates have the right technical skills but the challenge is finding talent that can genuinely add value, fit the culture, bring fresh ideas and hit the ground running.
The market may have shifted slightly in favour of employers; however, the best candidates remain discerning about where they work, with many prioritising roles that offer greater flexibility. Companies that move too slowly, have unrealistic expectations or assume great candidates will wait indefinitely may still miss out.
Now is an excellent time to review your team and make strategic hiring decisions, so long as you don't confuse a softer employment market with an abundance of exceptional talent.
The overall picture is one of a gradual cooling rather than a dramatic downturn. The RBA says labour market conditions have eased, while job advertisements have remained relatively stable, suggesting businesses are taking a conservative approach with staffing levels, rather than stopping hiring altogether.
