Is Now a Smart Time to Change Jobs?

When the market feels unpredictable, career decisions can suddenly feel much heavier. A role you may have dismissed six months ago can start to look “safe”, while the thought of moving jobs can feel exciting one minute and risky the next.

So if you’re currently asking yourself:

Do I take the offer, stay where I am, or hold out for something better?

The honest answer is this:

Don’t make a fear-based decision, make an informed one.

In turbulent times while stability matters, its important not to lose sight of your long-term career health.

If you’ve received a job offer, resist the temptation to focus only on the salary or title and take the time to do your due diligence. While salary is a key driver, a close second is the culture and environment of a company so its important to consider the bigger picture by asking questions such as:

- Is the business financially stable?

- Is the leadership credible?

- Does the role genuinely offer progression, development or exposure to new skills?

A new role should ideally improve your position, not just move you sideways under the illusion of safety.

On the other hand, staying in your current role can absolutely be the smartest move, even if your role not particularly fulfilled right now. If your job gives you security, decent leadership, flexibility and a manageable workload, there can be real value in riding out uncertainty while quietly strengthening your CV, network and confidence.

That said, staying put should not mean standing still.

If you know deep down your current role is draining you, limiting your growth or keeping you stuck in a cycle of under-appreciation, it may be time to start exploring - not in a reckless way - but strategically.

One of the biggest mistakes people make during uncertain periods is making career choices from a place of panic is to either jump too quickly because they fear missing out, or stay too long because change feels uncomfortable.

In turbulent times, should you take the job, stay put or keep looking?

Treat your career like an investment portfolio.

Don’t move for the sake of movement. But don’t cling to something that no longer serves you purely because the world feels unstable.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I learning?

  • Am I valued?

  • Am I being paid fairly?

  • Would this role still make sense for me in 12 months’ time?

The strongest career decisions are usually not about choosing the “safest” option, they’re about choosing the most sustainable one.

In uncertain times, the best move is rarely emotional but thoughtful, well-timed and aligned with where you want to go next.
